Things to Do in Malta in One Day: The Perfect 24-Hour Itinerary (2026)
Whether you're on a cruise shore excursion or just have a layover, one day in Malta is enough to see the highlights — if you plan it right. This itinerary focuses on Valletta and the Three Cities, the most walkable and rewarding area for a short visit.
Morning: Valletta (8am–12pm)
8:00am — Coffee in Valletta
Start your day at one of Valletta's cafes on Republic Street. The city wakes up early, and the morning light on the limestone buildings is beautiful.
9:00am — St John's Co-Cathedral
St John's Co-Cathedral is Malta's must-see attraction. The interior is a Baroque masterpiece — every inch is covered in gold, marble and paintings, including Caravaggio's Beheading of St John. Allow 1–1.5 hours.
Tip: Book ahead in peak season. Entry is €15.
10:30am — Upper Barrakka Gardens
Walk to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for the best views of the Grand Harbour. Time your visit for the noon cannon salute — it's loud, so be prepared.
11:00am — Walk Valletta's Streets
Wander down Republic Street and Strait Street. Don't miss:
- The Grand Master's Palace
- The Manoel Theatre (if open)
- The views from the Lower Barrakka Gardens
Lunch: Where to Eat in Valletta (12–2pm)
12:30pm — Lunch in Valletta
For a quick lunch, try Grain Street (small plates) or Trabuxu (Italian bistro).
For a longer lunch, Rubino (traditional Maltese) or Harbour Club (Mediterranean tasting menus).

Afternoon: The Three Cities (2–5pm)
2:00pm — Ferry to Senglea
Take the ferry from Valletta to Senglea (€1.50, 10 minutes). The crossing itself offers great views.
2:30pm — Explore Birgu (Vittoriosa)
Walk 10 minutes to Birgu and explore:
- The Citadella area
- The Maritime Museum
- The narrow streets of the Collacchio
4:00pm — Coffee or Aperitivo in Birgu
Stop at Cargo on the waterfront for a drink and a snack with harbour views.
Evening: Sunset and Dinner (5–9pm)
5:00pm — Sunset at Dingli Cliffs (if time)
If you have a car or taxi, head to Dingli Cliffs for sunset. It's 20 minutes from Valletta by car.
7:00pm — Dinner
For your one dinner in Malta, choose:
- Fine dining: Ion Harbour (two Michelin stars) or De Mondion in Mdina
- Great value: Terrone Birgu or Harbour Club
- Traditional Maltese: Rubino or Palazzo Preca
If You Have More Time
Two days in Malta
Add Mdina and the Mosta Rotunda on day two.
Three days in Malta
Add Gozo — take the ferry from Ċirkewwa (45 minutes) and explore the Citadella, Ramla Bay and Dwejra.

Practical Tips for a One-Day Visit
- Wear comfortable shoes — Valletta and Birgu are hilly with cobblestones
- Check the cruise schedule — on cruise days, Valletta is busier
- Use the ferry — the Valletta–Senglea ferry is the easiest way to the Three Cities
- Book restaurants ahead — especially for dinner
- Check the weather — Malta is hot in summer, bring water and sun protection
