Valletta is tiny β€” just 0.8 kmΒ² β€” but packed with enough to fill a day. This itinerary covers the best attractions, viewpoints and restaurants in Malta's capital.

Morning (9am–12pm)

9:00am β€” St John's Co-Cathedral

Start at St John's Co-Cathedral β€” Valletta's must-see. The Baroque interior is breathtaking, and Caravaggio's Beheading of St John is worth the entry alone.

Entry: €15 | Allow: 1-1.5 hours | Tip: Book ahead in peak season

10:30am β€” Republic Street

Walk down Republic Street, Valletta's main drag. Stop at:

11:45am β€” Upper Barrakka Gardens

Walk to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for the best views of the Grand Harbour. Time your visit for the noon cannon salute β€” it's loud!

Lunch (12–2pm)

12:30pm β€” Lunch in Valletta

Quick lunch: Grain Street (small plates) or Trabuxu (Italian bistro)

Longer lunch: Rubino (traditional Maltese) or Harbour Club (Mediterranean)

Afternoon (2–5pm)

2:30pm β€” Lower Barrakka Gardens

Walk to the Lower Barrakka Gardens for views of Fort St Elmo and the entrance to the Grand Harbour.

3:00pm β€” Fort St Elmo

Visit Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum. Allow 1.5 hours.

Entry: €10

4:30pm β€” Shopping and Coffee

Walk back through the city. Stop for coffee at one of the cafes on Republic Street or the Valletta Waterfront.

Evening (5–9pm)

5:00pm β€” Valletta Waterfront

Walk to the Valletta Waterfront (Pinto Wharf) for views of the city at sunset. If cruise ships are in, it's busy β€” check the cruise schedule.

Fine dining: Ion Harbour (two Michelin stars) or Risette

Great value: Harbour Club or Il Horza

Traditional Maltese: Rubino or Palazzo Preca

If You Have Extra Time

Add the Three Cities

Take the ferry from Valletta to Senglea (€1.50, 10 minutes) and walk to Birgu. Allow 2-3 hours.

Add the Lascaris War Rooms

The underground tunnels from which Eisenhower planned the invasion of Sicily. €15, allow 1 hour.

Practical Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes β€” Valletta is hilly with cobblestones
  • Bring water β€” it's hot from May to October
  • Book restaurants ahead β€” especially for dinner
  • Check the cruise schedule β€” Valletta is busier on cruise days
  • Most museums close by 5pm β€” plan accordingly
