Malta Shore Excursions: Cruise Passenger's Guide to the Best Tours & Activities

Arriving in Malta on a cruise? Valletta is one of the Mediterranean's great port cities β€” and you don't need to book through the cruise line to make the most of your time ashore. Independent bookings are typically 30–50% cheaper for the exact same tours.

This guide matches the best Malta activities to however long your port stop actually is.

Know Your Port Stop Length First

Typical cruise stops in Valletta run from 4 to 8 hours. Check your ship's schedule for exact arrival and departure times β€” and plan to be back at the terminal at least 30 minutes early.

Malta's compact size works in your favour: almost everything is within 30–45 minutes of Valletta by taxi or bus.

2–3 Hour Port Stop: Stay Near Valletta

With just 2–3 hours, keep it local.

Valletta City Centre is walkable from the cruise terminal in 10 minutes. St John's Co-Cathedral, the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens, and Republic Street can all be covered comfortably in 2 hours β€” with time for a coffee.

The 3 Cities (Birgu, Senglea, Cospicua) sit directly across the Grand Harbour from Valletta. A short ferry from Valletta's waterfront takes you there in 10 minutes for just a few euros β€” a very different, quieter side of Malta.

4–5 Hour Port Stop: Add Mdina or a Boat Trip

With 4–5 hours, you have time to combine Valletta with one more destination.

Mdina β€” Malta's ancient walled capital, known as the "Silent City" β€” is 30 minutes from Valletta by bus or 20 minutes by taxi. Allow 1.5–2 hours to wander the baroque streets and enjoy island-wide views from the bastions.

A Blue Lagoon group cruise takes 3–4 hours from departure to return. If the weather is good and you love the sea, this is Malta's most memorable experience. Boats leave from near the Valletta area and from Sliema.

Browse and book on our Malta Tours page β€” prices are typically far lower than ship-offered excursions.

6–8+ Hour Port Stop: Gozo, Boat Hire, or a Full Circuit

With 6+ hours, Malta opens up properly.

Gozo β€” Malta's quieter sister island β€” is worth a full day. Ggantija Temples (among the oldest freestanding structures on Earth), the Citadel, Xlendi Bay, and Marsalforn. Budget 7–8 hours including the ferry crossing.

Private boat hire is also ideal with a longer stop. Groups of 4+ can hire a motorboat for 3–4 hours, visit the Blue Lagoon independently, and return in good time. Browse options on our Malta Boat Hire page.

Practical Tips for Cruise Day-Trippers

  • Pre-book tours β€” popular Blue Lagoon cruises and Gozo tours sell out in peak season (July–August)
  • The hop-on/hop-off bus covers most key sites and is very convenient for cruise visitors
  • Taxis are metered β€” agree a price upfront for longer journeys
  • Return buffer: always add at least 30 minutes before your ship departs
  • Currency: Malta uses the Euro; credit cards are widely accepted everywhere
