Local Tip

The path to the sea is narrow and rocky — wear water shoes and visit when the sea is calm, as the small beach can be rough in swell.

Wied il-Għasri is one of Gozo's most distinctive and least-developed coastal valleys. A narrow, steep-sided gorge carved through limestone, it runs from the village of Għasri down to a tiny pebble-and-sand beach at the sea. The gorge is so narrow in places that only a few people can pass abreast, opening suddenly to reveal the blue expanse of the Mediterranean.

The valley is a favourite with locals for swimming and snorkelling in calm weather, and the surrounding cliffs are popular with walkers and photographers. A small chapel, the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, sits at the head of the valley. The site has no facilities — visitors should bring everything they need and take all rubbish away.

  • ✓Excellent swimming and snorkelling in calm conditions
  • ✓Coastal walking along the surrounding cliffs
  • ✓Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at the valley head
  • ✓Uncrowded and undeveloped — a true local spot

How to Get There
