Teatru Astra is one of two historic opera houses in Victoria, Gozo (the other being Teatru Aurora), and is a cornerstone of Gozo's cultural life. The theatre was built in the 1960s by the La Stella Philharmonic Society and has been progressively renovated and enlarged, with a major refurbishment completed in 2010. The auditorium is notable for its ornate ceiling, painted to depict the heavens, and its excellent acoustics.
Teatru Astra is best known for the Festival Mediterranea, an annual autumn festival of opera, classical music and cultural events that has been running since 2007 and attracts performers and audiences from across Malta and beyond. The theatre also hosts concerts, plays and community events throughout the year.
