Local Tip

Visit at the start of your Valletta day — the centre gives excellent context for the city's bastions and the fortifications you'll see everywhere.

The Fortress Builders Interpretation Centre is a free visitor centre housed in a restored 16th-century warehouse near the entrance to Valletta. It tells the story of Malta's extraordinary fortification heritage — from the early walled settlements through the Knights' massive bastion-building programme to the British-era defences.

The centre uses models, maps, interactive displays and original artefacts to explain how Malta became one of the most heavily fortified islands in the world. It is an excellent starting point for understanding the bastions, forts and defensive lines that dominate the island's landscape, and it provides context for visiting major sites like Fort St Elmo, Fort St Angelo and the Victoria Lines.
