Ta' Xbiex β€” Malta's Marina & Boat Charter Hub

Ta' Xbiex is a small waterside locality on Marsamxett Harbour, tucked between Sliema to the north and Msida to the south. It doesn't have a beach or a historic centre β€” what it has is marinas. Roland Marina and Gardens Marina together host one of the largest concentrations of private boat charters on Malta, making Ta' Xbiex the island's quiet alternative to Sliema for getting out on the water.

If you're booking a private catamaran, a sailing day trip, or a Comino excursion and the departure point says 'Ta' Xbiex', this guide tells you what to expect: how to get there, where to eat before or after your trip, and how Ta' Xbiex differs from nearby Sliema and Gzira.

Where to Eat in Ta' Xbiex

Ta' Xbiex has a small but strong waterfront dining scene, all within walking distance of the marinas:

  • Agora β€” Mediterranean and Turkish-inspired seafood and meze, scored 30/40. A good pre- or post-charter lunch.
  • Port 21 β€” Mediterranean and seafood brasserie, scored 27/40. Waterside location near the marina.
  • Boca β€” modern French bistro with a New York twist, scored 25/40.

For more dining options, the larger restaurant scenes of Sliema (10 minutes north) and Valletta (across the harbour) are both within easy reach.

Ta' Xbiex vs Sliema: Which Marina Base?

Sliema and Ta' Xbiex are neighbouring waterfront localities, but they serve different needs:

  • Sliema is the resort town β€” promenade, shopping, hotels, and the largest selection of restaurants and bars. If you want a full resort base with everything in walking distance, stay in Sliema.
  • Ta' Xbiex is the marina locality β€” quieter, more residential, with the boat charter fleet and a handful of good waterfront restaurants. If your main activity is a boat charter or sailing trip and you don't need the resort infrastructure, Ta' Xbiex is a calmer, more focused base.

The two are a 10-minute walk apart along the waterfront. You can stay in Sliema and walk to a Ta' Xbiex marina departure, or vice versa. See our Sliema area guide for the resort-side options.

How to Get to Ta' Xbiex

Ta' Xbiex is a 15-minute bus ride from Valletta (routes 13, 14, 16) and a 10-minute walk from Sliema's waterfront. The marinas are along the seafront β€” Roland Marina is at the northern end, Gardens Marina at the southern end, both clearly signposted.

By car, it's 15 minutes from Valletta and 25 minutes from the airport. Street parking near the marinas is limited β€” arrive early or use the paid car parks in nearby Gzira. If you're joining a charter, ask the operator for the exact marina and berth number before you set off.

What to Expect on a Charter Day

Most private charters from Ta' Xbiex are half-day (4 hours) or full-day (8 hours). A typical full-day charter heads north to Comino and the Blue Lagoon, with swimming stops at Crystal Lagoon and Santa Maria Bay, then returns via the Gozo coast. Half-day charters usually focus on Comino or a sunset sail.

Skippers are included or mandatory on most Ta' Xbiex charters β€” self-drive options are rarer here than at Sliema. Bring swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, and a towel. Water and light refreshments are usually provided; check whether lunch is included or bring your own.
