7 Sins - Moveo Dance Company

Moveo Dance Company, founded in 2008 by Artistic Director Dorian Mallia in Malta, is an award-winning contemporary dance ensemble. Renowned for original productions like "Frida," "Carmen," and "The Other Door," it performs at local festivals such as Malta International Arts Festival and Notte Bianca, while touring internationally with shows like "From Malta with Love."

Their latest show '7 Sins' is an interesting if uneven work. Each of the Seven Deadly Sins is explored, in a supposed underground chamber presided over by a Master Of Ceremonies. This is 'immersion theatre' in the sense that each member of the audience is asked to vote at the end of the piece with a token given to you as you enter, just don't drop on the way to your seat as I did.

The concept is good, and some of the individual sins stand out. A weird exploration of 'Gluttony' with a nun devouring chocolates who turns round to reveal a giant mouse head, and somehow dances backwards. 'Wrath' sees one of the company infuriated as we all have been, to the point of uncontrollable anger by a telephone bot that just won't recognize the jumper he has ordered is supersize. 'Vanity' is also haunting, and well performed.

All of the tableaux are visually charged. They are also weird - do girls really have sexual fantasies about other girls dressed as Father Christmas as in 'Lust'? And the masks in 'Greed' were both visually charged and weird. Nothing wrong with that.

But overall there is just not enough dancing, and some of the pieces feel a bit thin. I found myself losing concentration, particularly as two girls in row B were filming the performance on their iPhones, very distracting in the dark.

I know this young troupe well and I think they could do more. More dancing less acting please.
