Food at Trattoria Del Mare: 14/20
The food here is classic Italian seaside fare and the pricing is good. The menu is quite inventive given how small the kitchen is. Tuna tartare at €14, a salmon one at €15. Raw local shrimp at €3.95 each. Quite a few pastas. Fettucine with seafood for €19, or fusilli with aubergine for just €16, mozzarella ravioli for €14, fettucine with sausages €16. For main courses there is a straight forward salmon fillet for €17, or breaded seabass for €18. Angus beef is €27, while breaded veal is €36. Sides are separate at €4. A few desserts at €6.
Atmosphere at Trattoria Del Mare: 8/10
This may feel like an informal pop up on the seafront, but it also feels like St. Tropez. It is very much the place for a sunny lunch with Malta’s younger in-crowd, and walk-in visitors. They don’t normally take bookings, which is frustrating as it means it’s hard to arrange to meet friends here, and those waiting for tables sit on the sea wall with a cocktail. Peeple fight for tables in the shade, while on the very few rainy days there’s not much doing. For the loo you have to go across the road, so go before you come.
Service at Trattoria Del Mare: 7/10
The staff are largely Italian and they swish between the tables at speed, juggling various plates. There are lots of cocktails and a small wine list dominated by the less expensive Italian wines. A Pecorino for €24, Gavi for €25, a Pinot Grigio for €26. In the reds there is a Nero d’avola at only €19, and one chianti reserva for €40.
