The Victoria Lines are a linear defensive system built by the British in the late 19th century, running for roughly 12 kilometres across the width of Malta from Madliena Fort in the east to Fomm ir-Riħ Bay in the west. The fortifications follow a natural geological escarpment — the Great Fault — that divides the island's north from its south. Named after Queen Victoria, who reviewed the troops here in 1888, the line was intended to defend against a northern invasion from the bays of St Paul's Bay and Mellieħa.
Although the Victoria Lines were never used in battle and were quickly rendered obsolete by military technology, they remain one of Malta's most impressive and least-visited historic features. Today the line and its associated forts, infantry lines, and gun positions form a remarkable walking route, with sections of preserved wall, defensive positions, and sweeping views across the island. The best-preserved section is at Dwejra Lines, near Mosta.
