Local Tip

St Agatha's Tower, commonly known as the Red Tower for its distinctive red-painted exterior, is a 17th-century coastal watchtower built by the Knights of St John in 1649 on the Marfa Ridge in Mellieha. It is one of the largest of the Knights' coastal towers and was built to guard the northern approaches to Malta, particularly the bays at Mellieha and the channel to Comino.

The tower has been restored by the heritage organisation Din l-Art Δ¦elwa and is open to the public. The roof offers panoramic views over Mellieha Bay, Comino, Gozo and the whole of northern Malta β€” some of the best views on the island. The tower's red colour makes it a distinctive landmark, visible from miles around. It is a short detour from the road to the Cirkewwa ferry terminal.
