Our Review of Terroir, Attard

Food at Terroir: 15/20

This is a little gem of a place, run by two guys. One cooks, the other front of house. Andre is a pupil of the British chef Gordon Ramsey. It is upscale with a limited, but good menu, with lots to spark your interest. Starters include Risotto with truffle, celeriac, and 36 month parmesan, at €17, a Cured amberjack at €16, and particularly good home-made ricotta gnocchi, with truffle, parmesan, and veal jus at €18. There is also a local red prawn carpaccio, with smoked potato custard and dashi for €18. For mains, apart from a fish of the day at €30, there are several meat dishes. Lamb with butternut squash at €33, a Beef ribeye, with roasted cauliflower purée and a ‘classic jus’ at €35, and, perhaps the best dish, an aged duck teriyaki, with a red cabbage and duck jus, at €32. Amongst deserts, the 60% Valrhona chocolate tart, with chocolate ice cream at €10 is outstanding.

Atmosphere at Terroir: 7/10

Terroir is situated in an historic house on a small square. It is appointed in a modern fashion to a high standard, but is nonetheless comfortable. There are two levels – ground and first floor, with just one table available on the balcony on the first floor. Midweek, it tends to be quiet – indeed sometimes we have been the only table in there. It’s a bit like having a private chef. So this is a good restaurant if you want to have a private chat about something. If you want a buzz then this is not for you.

Service at Terroir: 9/10

Nick is a charming host and he will look after you carefully, He will also have no trouble in remembering what you like and don’t like or what wine you ordered last time you were there. The wine list is medium sized but well curated with a good selection of French wine, and, hoorah, vintages. Amongst the whites, Chablis ‘Saint Martin’, Domaine Laroche is just €39, while Domaine Fournier’s Sancerre is €48. A Condrieu by Lionel Faury at €85 stands out. The reds are a bit pricier. A Perrin Rhone at €100 is surely overpriced. You might as well have a Nuits Saint Georges for €110, or the Pauillac Pedesclaux 2017 for €120. What is good value is the Meunier champagne for only €48.
