Fort St Elmo
A star fort at the tip of the Sciberras Peninsula, home to the National War Museum and a major venue for the Malta Biennale.
About the fort
Fort St Elmo is a star fort at the tip of the Sciberras Peninsula in Valletta, commanding the entrance to the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour. Built by the Order of St John and expanded over centuries, it played a pivotal role in the Great Siege of 1565.
Today, Fort St Elmo houses the National War Museum and serves as a major exhibition venue, most notably for the Malta Biennale. Its vast halls, ramparts and underground spaces provide a dramatic setting for contemporary art installations that engage with the fort's military history and the island's strategic significance.
